AROUND THE TOWN

HER BIRTHDAY was the reason for a celebration at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Estelita Roos wore a birthday headdress to mark the occasion with husband Lars and daughter Liza Calica.

ROMANCE WAS IN THE AIR AT CELEBRATION

By Patty Hill

“I’ve never celebrated my birthday before,” gushed a grateful Estelita Roos to the crowd of friends that filled the Champagne Room at the Regent Beverly Wilshire in late January. Moments later her husband Lars announced his birthday gift, the surprise arrival of Liza, Este’s beautiful daughter from Manila whose tender tribute to Mom brought tears to the eyes of such guests as: Suz and Peter Landay, Gil and Katya Seton, Rafael Marchana–Heyke, Kay Brown, Greta Peck, Bo and Lise Swenson Blackwell and Spencer, Maude Adams and Charles Rubin, Kerstin Alm, Edye Rugulo, and Jane and Ake Sandler.

Among the flock of Roos fans that flew in from Sweden to applaud as the Honorable Thomas Rosander, Consul General of Sweden and his wife Christina pronounced Estelita “an honorary Swede” were Lars’s mom, Ragnhild Roos and his brother Bjorn with his wife Marit. There were serenades from a glamorous “Swedish Mafia” of blonde ladies, musical performances by Jim and Irene Gibbons, dancing with a wonderful jazz trio and special numbers from the master pianist/composer himself—about whom NY Times music critic Peter C. Davis recently wrote, “With Mr. Roos, the romantic revival is in safe hands.” Romantic is the very word indeed for this most enchanted evening.

Meanwhile, on that very same starry night, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising presented the glamorous preview of the 15th annual “Art of Motion Picture Design” exhibit featuring outstanding costumes and Oscar-nominated designs. FIDM president Barbara Bundy was on hand as was gallery director Robert Nelson. Among the 100 costumes representing 25 of last year’s films are works by area designers: Mayes C. Rubeo, (“Apocalypto”) Sharen Davis, (“Dreamgirls”) and Marlene Stewart, (“The Holiday”) Admission is free. The exhibit runs through April 5.

The California Science Center welcomed 400 guests to a galaxy far, far away under the forest moon of Endor for an altogether galactic 9th annual Discovery Ball in mid-February. Guests arrived via red carpet, with extraterrestrial salutations from a battalion of space rebels coordinated by Shawn Crosby.

Guests in black tie and gown enjoyed the museum’s exhibit “Starwars: Where Science Meets Imagination” where they sipped neon blue martinis and mingled with such galacterazzi as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt.

Dinner was served aboard the Imperial Starship Destroyer where Kensington Caterers presented a heavenly Kobe beef tenderloin meal as the planets whizzed overhead and a mini space war rocketed across the dining room. After the space invaders departed, Jeffrey Rudolph thanked ball co-chairs Margo Leonetti O’Connell and Rosanne O’Brien for a fantastic voyage to the stars while marveling at the prophetic vision of the “Star Wars” creators as science brings more and more of their fantasy into reality every day.

After dinner, many disembarked for dancing in the Vader Nightclub replete with an espresso bar and the “Airheads Oxygen Bar.”

Meanwhile, others enjoyed a private Imax screening of “Destiny in Space,” including museum trustees Delores and Ben Oliver Kerr with their son, painter Mark Kerr and granddaughter Jade James, Joe Guinta, Melba and Aubrey Provost, Jim Hahn, Janice Hahn, Tom and Bridget La-Bonge, Cathy and Steve Needleman and Victoria Foote.

The International Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic held a champagne reception at the St. John Boutique in Beverly Hills. Ruth and Richard Popkin hosted the evening of fashion that served as a kick-off event leading up to the committee’s March 30 ball at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Guests included Kay Brown, committee honoree and member for over 50 years, Ambassador Byung Hyo Choi of the Republic of Korea with Mrs. Choi, and the Honorable Roy Young of Belize, the Dean of the Los Angeles Consular Corps. Guests were entertained by seven members of the Korean Classical Music Institute of America.

And that’s the chat!
