AIR RAID SIRENS

 

AIR RAID warning tower on First St., just west of Larchmont Blvd., is one of 200 still in existence in the city.

SIRENS NO LONGER SERVE AS SENTINELS

The 30-foot air raid siren that looms over the skyline on First St. near Larchmont Blvd. has been silent for the last 21 years.

The sirens were last heard in 1986 when they were tested at 10 a.m. on the last Friday of each month.

The sirens served as an early warning system during the 1950s when the government felt there was the threat of a nuclear attack.

The towers feature a variety of designs including the birdhouse, wire spool, rotating, and flat-tened birdhouse.

Less than 200 of the towers remain in Los Angeles, many of them near La Brea Ave. and on Melrose Ave. They are disappearing as development moves in. Federal money was used to purchase and install them, but there are no funds allocated to remove the sirens.

However, the Office of Homeland Security has allocated money to install new ones along the coast to serve as Tsunami warnings.
