ST. BRENDAN STUDENT TRAVELING TO JAPAN

Laura Eversz

VISITS TO Mt. Fuji and Hiroshima are on People to People student ambassador Oliver Hale’s itinerary.

Seventh-grader Oliver Hale recently learned he’d been accepted to participate as a student leader after being recommended for the People to People Ambassador Program by his teachers at St. Brendan School.

Since then, Oliver, son of Barbara and George Hale of Windsor Square, has been participating in classroom civics instructions to prepare for his two-week visit to Japan, where he’ll stay in the home of a host family. He’s also been busy raising funds to pay for the trip, and dreaming about what he’ll do when he gets there.

In addition to meeting with government officials and other students his age, Oliver plans to climb Mt. Fuji and visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “I’ll also be eating new kinds of foods,” said Oliver. “My mom says that will be good for me.”

The People to People Ambassador Program was founded by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. Eisenhower believed that peace could be promoted through cultural understanding among young people of the world. He felt the best way to do this was by face-to-face contact through cultural activities.

Oliver can’t wait. “I’m so excited to go on this adventure,” he said. “And I plan to share my experiences when I return by presenting my journal and photographs.”

In the meantime, his mom, a yoga teacher, is helping him out by donating her fee for Saturday morning classes in April and May to his tuition fund. She’ll host kundalini yoga and meditation classes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at 321 S. Van Ness Ave. Suggested donation is $10; any amount is welcome.

For dates or more information, call Barbara Hale at 323-445-6803, or e-mail
