"The St. Andrews Square Neighborhood Assoc. (SASNA) residents
feel the signs bestow dignity on a venerable neighborhood that
history had largely forgotten," said SASNA president Henrietta
Cosentino.

One of the area's earliest celebrity residents was "America's
Sweetheart" Mary Pickford. The young film star lived with
her mother in a bungalow at 108 S. St. Andrews Place while starring
in silent movies at nearby Raleigh Studios.

Developed largely between 1910 and 1930, the neighborhood's characteristic
architecture is the Craftsman bungalow. In the 1920s the Gailmore
Apartment House at 108 S. Gramercy Ave., and the landmark Wilshire
Branch Library, designed by Allan K. Ruoff at 149 N. St. Andrews
Place, were constructed.

The new signs bring recognition, pride and dignity
to a once-neglected community," said Cosentino.
